In the fast-paced world of packaging, staying current with industry terminology is essential for effective communication and collaboration. Manufacturers and companies need to understand the latest terms to streamline processes, foster innovation, and drive success. To help you stay informed, we’ve compiled a comprehensive glossary of key packaging terms that every manufacturer should be familiar with.

• Sustainable Packaging: This term encompasses materials, designs, and practices that minimize environmental impact throughout the packaging lifecycle. It includes concepts such as recyclability, compostability, biodegradability, renewable resources, and reduced carbon footprint.
• Flexible Packaging: This involves the use of lightweight and pliable materials like films, foils, and laminates, providing versatility in design, storage, and transportation. Flexible packaging offers benefits such as convenience, product protection, and reduced material usage.
• Rigid Packaging: Rigid packaging refers to firm and inflexible materials like plastic bottles, glass jars, or metal cans. It offers durability, structural integrity, and enhanced product visibility.
• Primary Packaging: This refers to the layer of packaging that directly contacts the product. It serves to protect the product during distribution and storage while providing necessary information and branding elements.
• Secondary Packaging: Secondary packaging includes the additional layers of packaging that surround the primary packaging. It provides additional protection during transportation, facilitates shelf display, and often serves as a marketing tool.
• Blister Packaging: Blister packaging consists of clear plastic cavities or pockets attached to a backing material. It is commonly used for pharmaceuticals, consumer electronics, and small retail items.
• Shelf-Ready Packaging (SRP): SRP is designed to optimize product display and stocking on retail shelves. It allows for easy identification, faster restocking, and reduced handling, enhancing overall efficiency.
• Child-Resistant Packaging (CRP): CRP incorporates features that prevent or delay young children from accessing potentially harmful substances. It is commonly used for pharmaceuticals, cleaning products, and chemicals.
• Tamper-Evident Packaging: Tamper-evident packaging includes features that indicate whether a product has been tampered with or opened before purchase. It provides consumers with a sense of security and protects the integrity of the product.

Partnering with a reliable and experienced packaging company is crucial for achieving high-quality results. Post Press Specialties is proud to offer a comprehensive range of print finishing services, including folding, gluing, binding, and die-cutting. With our recently installed Bobst Mastercut Die-cutter, we can provide even more precise and efficient die-cutting services, ensuring your printed materials stand out and leave a lasting impression.

A recently published study by The Print Industries Market Information and Research Organization (PRIMIR) looked at print finishing services and their perceived and implied value. It’s clear that print enhancements and profitability go hand-in-hand.

The study looked at 23 printing special effects, including glitter, gloss & matte, scents, scratch-off, glow-in-the dark, and textures printed with UV coatings and other specialty inks.

According to Hal Hinderliter who conducted the study, “Adding value to print is often touted as a way to improve the profitability of print service providers, but until now there has never been definitive research on the topic.” Hinderliter’s team surveyed 577 print service providers (PSPs), trade service providers (TSPs), print buyers, brand managers, and vendors through in-depth phone interviews.

Their findings are as follows (graphic courtesy of The Visual Media Alliance):

Post Press Specialties excels in offering the exact print finishing services that were deemed the most valuable. We’ve become one of the Midwest’s largest binderies by continuously reinvesting in our equipment and adding capacity. Here is just a small sampling of what we can do:

Pretend that every single person you meet has a sign around his or her neck that says, ‘Make me feel important.’ Not only will you succeed in sales, you will succeed in life. -Mary Kay Ash

We all know that in the ultra competitive environment of commercial printing, keeping your customers happy is critical to the long-term success of any business. Retaining a high retention rate within your existing customer base is the foundation of all outstanding and prosperous enterprises. While this would seem like common sense, many businesses fall short and ultimately fail because they don’t have a winning strategy to enhance and cultivate customer loyalty.

At Post Press Specialties, we’re all about building long lasting relationships with our customers. Throughout our almost twenty five years of service to the commercial printing industry, we’ve found that great customer service, engagement and integrity are more than just the right things to do – they are also good for business.

We would like to share our “Great Eight” best practices and invite you to share some of yours.

Values

Research from the Corporate Executive Board that included 7,000 consumers from across the U.S. found that of those consumers who said they had a strong relationship with a brand, 64 percent cited shared values as the primary reason. If you want loyal customers, you need to create real connections with them. While we’re one of the largest binderies in the Midwest, we’ve never lost our “small town” sensibility. Our doors are always open. Call Post Press Specialties at 816-257-1919 and we’ll be happy to take you on a tour of our plant.

It’s not just sales, it’s education

In a recent research study from TARP Worldwide, they found that customers enjoy receiving helpful recommendations on new information and products that will help them achieve better results. We especially love to show our customers ways to reduce costs while keeping the integrity and outstanding quality of their print jobs intact. There isn’t a week that goes by that we don’t suggest a better (and often less expensive) way to finish a print piece.

Customers enjoy businesses who know them

Numerous behavioral psychology studies have shown that everybody views their service experience as more positive when they don’t feel rushed or ignored. We have a personal relationship with all of our customers, big or small. We’ve become good friends with many of our clients.

Teamwork

Countless case studies have made one thing clear when it comes to creating an efficient support system: You need to keep everybody in the loop. We pride ourselves on having many checks and balances during our quality control processes.

Don’t run and hide from your mistakes

We’re not perfect. However, we know that when something does go wrong an apology isn’t enough. We take ownership of our errors and make it right. Commercial printing is a tough industry and we know what it takes to succeed. When mistakes do occur, we painstakingly search for the reason and correct our processes so it doesn’t happen again.

We listen

Over the past twenty-five years, we’ve gotten to know what commercial printers need. Post Press Specialties has become one of the largest binderies in the Midwest by listening to our customers. We pride ourselves on offering the most up to date finishing techniques by investing in our equipment and workforce.

We’re constantly upgrading

We never settle. We’re constantly adding new equipment to better serve the commercial printing industry. We’re especially excited with our two most recent additions: MGI Jet Varnish 3D Spot UV Coater and Young Shin 57” Die Cutter. Give us a call at 816-257-1919 and we’ll be happy to show you what these powerful machines can do.

All our customers are VIP’s

We are committed to treating all of our customers, big or small, exactly the same. It doesn’t matter if you have a $100 or a $1,000,000 job. We’ll offer the same level of professionalism and expertise to everyone.

There are many tactics, but no shortcuts; we know that we can’t “hack” a business relationship. Offering the most comprehensive finishing services to the commercial printing industry is our mission. Call us at 816-257-1919 and we’ll be happy to discuss ways that we can help. “Finishing Strong” is all we do.

Post Press Specialties offers a wide array of different binding options. We’re experts in perfect, wire-o, plastic coil, spiral wire and concealed binding. We’re also proficient in stitching applications such as loop and saddle stitching.

Of all the softcover book binding methods we offer, saddle stitching is one of the most popular. Saddle stitching is perfect for a variety of book types, such as: catalogs, manuals, booklets, programs, multi-page brochures, newsletters, periodicals, wall calendars and mailers.

Saddle Stitching is a relatively simple method that joins the folded pages and cover with at least two wire staples placed through the crease of the book’s spine. For over twenty-five years, we’ve been assisting commercial printers throughout the Midwest, helping them to produce professional looking documents.

Some of the benefits of saddle stitching are:

Cost – Oftentimes, saddle stitching is the least expensive option.

Turnaround Time – Usually saddle stitching takes less time than other binding methods.

Small Quantities – It can be used for very short production runs.

Size– saddle stitching can be used for a wide variety of sizes.

Design – Designing a saddle stitch piece is generally very easy.

Mailing – Saddle stitching will add minimal weight to a printed piece. This is especially important for pieces that will be mailed.

Versatility – Saddle stitch projects can be printed in color or black and white.

Alas, saddle stitching does have some limitations. Keep in mind the following:

Thickness – Depending on the weight and caliper of the paper stock, saddle stitching might not be a good option. Bulky books might be too thick to fold properly. Post Press Specialties will be happy to discuss any and all specifications.

Spine – There is no room to print anything on the spine. This is a problem for certain projects.

Power of Four – Saddle Stitched books are created from folded sheets, thus the page count must be in multiples of four.

If you have any questions about saddle stitching or any of our print enhancement and bindery services, please don’t hesitate to contact Post Press Specialties at 816-257-1919. Located in Missouri, we’ve been serving the commercial printing industry for a quarter century.

It was just a matter of time before someone produced a comedy about the printing industry. Kudos goes out to Sappi and their new web series, “Off Register”. From Sappi’s website:

Sappi Productions and The Flo Channel proudly present Off Register, the first online series inspired by the insanity printers have to deal with on a daily basis. Off Register is a totally unvarnished and uncoated look at what goes on behind the glossy world of print production. You name it, it’s here. The designers who don’t know the difference between CMYK and DKNY. The clients who need their Labrador to sign off on a press check.

Get ready to meet the entire cast of characters— Sully, the all-knowing, eye-rolling printer. Kat, the designer, who’s still trying to figure out which end of the loupe is up. And all the rest of the gang. And the best part? All the stories are inspired by real world experiences of printers across the country. After all, Off Register is really your show. So why shouldn’t they be your stories? With a little comic spice, of course.

See what happens when the ink hits the fan… on Off Register.

Let’s be honest, getting your printed piece noticed is sometimes very difficult. Consider this: Yankelovich, a market research firm, estimates that a person living in a city 30 years ago saw up to 2,000 ad messages a day, compared with up to 5,000 today. About half the 4,110 people surveyed last spring by Yankelovich said they thought marketing and advertising today was out of control.

Marketers need to take advantage of every possible strategy that will get them noticed. Today we’re going to discuss foil enhancements and how they’ve become one of the most viable ways to increase success of your printed piece. Post Press Specialties new MGI Jet Varnish 3D Spot Coater can help you attain remarkable results through foil enhancements.

Consider these findings from a study commissioned by the Foil & Specialty Effects Association:

There are many processes that can be applied to printed pieces to stimulate attraction and hold the attention of a viewer. Some of these processes have long been in existence and are a part of the branding strategy for many companies in a wide variety of product marketing categories, including food and beverage, cosmetics and grocery. Today, processes that increase visibility, stimulate attraction, hold attention, and convey an image of value are known as High-Visibility Enhancements. The list of high-visibility enhancements includes several processes and many references. These processes include embossing, specialty UV coatings and metallic finishes.

The study outlined instances where foil enhancements increased the success and viability of marketing campaigns, such as these case studies:

Colgate® Total® Toothpaste Launch 2

 Product introduced in the United States with holographic foilstamped packaging in early December 1997 with a $100 millionmarketing campaign

 Becomes the #1 toothpaste brand in USA within four months witha 30 percent market share

 Altered the standard of packaging in the oral care category

Best Choice® Private Label Products 5

 Added gold foil stamping to its olive oil brand

 Retailers who stocked the new package experienced a 30-percentjump in velocity for the brand and retention of 10-15 percent thereafter. Over time, other products received packaging makeovers featuring foil stamping.

 Sales for parent company Associated Wholesale Grocers, Inc. from 2004 to 2008 increased by nearly 50 percent.

 A 2006 survey commissioned by the Private Label Manufacturers Association reported that 57 percent of respondents said packaging for private label brands is just as good as the packaging for national brands.

 Best Choice® products are the test subjects in the study described within this white paper.

Gillette® MACH3® Razor Launch 3

 Product introduced with overprinted/foil stamped graphics in 1998

 Becomes the #1 selling razor in the USA and Europe within sixmonths despite a premium price tag that many critics believed wastoo high

Perhaps the most significant finding was how the use of foil enhancements increased the perception of security and quality in the marketplace:

It is the conclusion of the research team that this was a very thorough and effective pilot study. There are clear advantages to foil stamping on packaging, in terms of attracting attention faster and retaining attention on packaging longer than identical packages without foil stamping. Through these tests, it is also the hypothesis of the research team that foil stamping increases sales, but this will need to be quantified through a study specific to tracking sales.

Overall, this pilot experiment clearly indicates that foil stamping on packaging provides real benefits concerning consumer attention on packaging. Additional studies are recommended to confirm these results and explore other potential benefits of visual enhancement techniques on packaging.
